One of the largest issues I have tackled throughout my time as State Representative is the health of Michigan's children. We must do more to educate our kids about nutrition and physical fitness. I support putting requirements on school districts to develop physical education programs and establish health plans for their students. I've worked with southwest Michigan school nutrition directors and proposed a 'Farm to Schools' initiative to take fruits and vegetables directly from southwest Michigan farms to southwest Michigan schools.
Focusing on better nutrition and promoting physical activity at an early age helps children develop self-esteem, reduces stress and establishes the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits. It will also save taxpayers millions if not billions of dollars in the long run through lower health care costs and increased productivity.
